my name is justin. i pretty much love watching all of you get everything entirely wrong. this place is for my collective online consciousness and holds everything that makes me, me.

i’m also a daft ruby/rails/js/unix/c++ developer from the late 90s underground, enjoys being toffee-nosed and obsessing over electronic music (no, not what YOU call “techno”).

mental_missing(*all)

TM FTW

TM FTW:

Hip-hop and Rap (definitely a difference) has long been overdue for a switch in momentum. Old dinosaurs of the old-school scene are getting old, and so is the younger “ghetto gang-star” scene as well. So what will move in to replace it?

With the death of DJ K-Swift, the infamous Queen of Baltimore Club, I’ve been drawn back down into the sounds of Maryland hip-house style club music. A style of house music that was also started back in the late 80s.

Back then, Hip-House as it was called, was a fuzing of two genres which were rising in popularity at the time. Hip-House combined hip-hop’s style of rapping with house music’s club, 4-to-the-floor, beat. Like most mash-up genres of the late 80s, it was rather corny and short lived. However, like most music genres, a rare few held on to it.

Fast forward ten years later, Wikipedia describes it best…

“In the late 1990s, Baltimore club music developed a cult following in the North Jersey club scene, particularly in the Brick City club genre of Newark, New Jersey. This spread stems from the distribution of mix tapes from traveling Baltimore deejays.”

All major east coast club scenes were playing this new “Baltimore Club” music during the new millennium… as it brought a somewhat silly, ghetto flavor to the party mix.

So how does all of this tie into yet another 10 years later, to the current state of music in 2008? Lets go back to Wikipedia one more time…

“In recent years Baltimore club has moved away from clubs like the Paradox and into the studio with rap artists. This combination of club music and rap has created a new subgenre in hip hop music to rival other regional scenes. The club movement has gained momentum; in January 2007, DJ Booman produced a B-more remix for Diddy on Bad Boy Records. DJ Excel produced a B-more remix of Hangar 18’s “Baking Soda” for the independent underground hip-hop label Definitive Jux as well. DJ Say-Wut has now taking a strong European audience, getting play by other DJs such as Sinden.”

Hip-hop has largely been commercialized, and taken away from the typical listener. Rap lyrics glorifying fancy living and West Coast gangsterism’s are starting to push away the rap fan. Unlike old school hip-hop in the 80s, a majority of the new younger generation demographic does not have anything similar with these artists.

Enter the resurgence of the “B-more” Club music scene. Bringing something back to hip-hop that has not been seen for almost 20 years. A scene. Dancing. Community. All wrapped into a package that the music fan can participate in, not just speculate and pipe dream.

Tenerife Skunkworks: Parsing text and binary files with Erlang

Tenerife Skunkworks: Parsing text and binary files with Erlang: Erlang originated in the telecommunications industry where one of the major tasks is conversion of text and binary data from one format to another.
